Why many riding boots never truly fit

Many riders believe their riding boots do not fit because they have chosen the wrong size. In reality the problem is often something completely different.

The fit of a riding boot is not determined only by foot size or calf circumference. The shape of the foot, the ankle, the development of the calf and the transition towards the knee all play an important role.

In my work I call this “reading the leg.”

With more than 60 years of experience with riding boots I have learned that fitting boots is not just about measurements. It is about understanding the structure of the rider’s leg.

Small differences in calf shape, ankle structure or foot shape can make a big difference in comfort, support and appearance.

Many problems with riding boots occur because:

  • only measurements are taken

  • the shape of the leg is not properly assessed

  • the wrong boot model is chosen

A well-chosen riding boot supports the leg while riding, prevents pressure points and remains comfortable for many years.
